Wesak is the thrice blessed Day to commemorate the Birth, Englightentment and Parinibbana of the Buddha. Various charitable programs are held at the Vihara such as Blood and Organ Donation, Program to give aid to the old folks and charitable homes (Caring & Sharing program). Eight Precepts observance programs and an Exhibition by the Sunday School is also held during this period where about 100,000 devotees and visitors will be visiting the Vihara. The Vihara will be illuminated at night with multi coloured lights and decorations and free food and drinks are given to the public. A large float and candle light procession is also held at night proceesing from the Vihara to the city centre attended by about 30,000 devotees. The Wesak procession was started by the Vihara since 1895.

This cultural potpourri features Cultural Dances from the various Asian communities such as Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Nepalese, Thai, Burmese and Sri Lankan where Buddhism played an inspiring role in the development of their culture and civilization.

Poson Full Moon - Honoring Emperor Asoka's 2300 Years Dhammadutta Mission

This full moon marks the great historical event of the first Buddhist missioners sent beyond India by the Great Emperor Asoka. By the noble action of this great Emperor among the first countries who embraced Buddhism was Sri Lanka. The BISDS students will put up a special performance to mark this special Full Moon Day.

This Full Moon marks the preaching of the first ever Discourse by the Buddha, after his Enlightenment, to the 5 Ascetics. During this Full Moon Puja, the Sangha will be chanting the Dhammacakkapavatana Sutta. This day also marks the beginning of the Vassana period, where the Sangha will be invited to observe Vassana for the 3 months rainy retreat.

Assembly for transference of merits to departed relatives and loved ones. The Buddha has shown us how beings are born, passes away and reborn based on their own good and bad actions. Not all our loved ones who pass away have a better afterlife. It is our duty to perform many meritorious actions and share merits with all of them. If they are in a position to receive these merits, they will be reborn in a better state, or their suffering will be reduced or alleviated. They and the Devas will bless and protect us for this meritorious deed.

Sanghamitta Day 8 Precepts program by Bhikkuni Kusuma. This Full Moon Day commemorates the arrival of the Buddhist Nun Sanghamitta in Sri Lanka to establish the Bhikkhuni Order, and also bringing with her a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained Englightenment. This sapling which has grown to become a large tree can still be seen in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is the oldest historical tree in recorded history.
