The author highlights the importance of internalizing Buddhism in one's daily life. A strong emphasis along the lines of Pariyatti, Patipatti, Pativedha (to study, practice and realize the Dhamma) is espoused.

He goes on further to advocate the adoption of Buddhist names as an auto-suggestive mechanism to live up to the meaning of the name instead of being named in a Western stylish, ego placating, meaningless and cultureless manner.

Title : The Terrifying Drug Menace : Relevence and Role of Bhuddhism

This paper was presented by the author in an international conference held at Bangkok on the role of religion in addressing the drug menace. Paradoxically, although the Fifth Precept advocates strong abstinence against drug abuse and the Buddha's famous saying “ One who serves the sick serves me” comes to mind and mental cultivation is a central theme in Buddhism.

Few Buddhists organizations are actively involved in tackling the drug menace. The very few monks in Thailand who are actually involved have successfully applied Buddhist principles in their drug rehabilitation programs and proven to be a beacon of strength to the drug addicts as well as other NGOs.
